Three years later.....

Checking in three years later. How time flies and I am basically rooted here in shanghai with my husband, work and the new family member, little Ethelyn.

Little Ethelyn was born two years ago in Singapore and yours truly is a mum now. Lately I am deliberating on whether I should be a full time mom after all the stress, nonsense and political climate in my office. I wish life can be more simple when people work just for work and nothing else.

I am looking forward to every weekend where I can spent good time with my gal and also my family!

It's Saturday again!

Guilty V Guilty

It has been almost 2 years since I last written.

V long. V V long.

And it doesn't help that I am living within the Great Wall of China and the lazy bone in me kept procrastinating to get the VPN. Not the money really, but I am just plain too lazy.

I heard Vox is no longer in existence thus I believe all my mails are washed down the drain along with the heavy rainway plaguing Singapore these few days!

Amusing MRT ride

After many rounds of invitation to my colleagues L's mother kampong place at the outskirt of Shanghai, I finally said yes.

Yes, because I feel very "paiseh" to decline so many times since the first invitation started last year. So this morning I left home at 12pm noon and head my way to the outskirt of Shanghai to experience the "laid back kampong lives" which is fast disappearing in the modern city of Shanghai. .

From my place, I have to take Line 2 to 四季大道( Si Ji Da Dao ) and change to Line 8 all the way to the end of the station 港城路。On my way there in Line 8, I was sitting across this young girl who was camwhoring all the way for the moment she got onto the train right to she got off.

At first, she didn't catch my attention but after awhile , she GOT my attention. Honestly, I am not the type to snap other people in open like *chee go pek* cos I am a strong believer of privacy but hey... she was doing it for almost 30 mins, adjusting the camera, holding it at different angles and so so oblivious to the rest of the commuters that I HAD to capture this prizeless moment.

Pic 1 - At first I was wondering why a girl is holding her hand so far out with her hp at this awkward angle. Then it dawn on me that she is camwhoring herself. This poses was repeated many times that I couldn't help but whip out my phone to snap.

Pic no 2, after several shots the girl would examine her own shots in her camera (PDA phone hor).

Pic 3 - Not happy with the effect? Take again. this time front shot. She took many shots at this angle, adjusting her face, her hair, checking her own phone. (I believe we past 2 stops while she was at it)

The previous pictures must have been to close for her, so thus she changed her hp position to taking a further shot and adjusting her hair. The man sitting on her far right was also staring at her throughout the whole journey, and I was also busy playing with phone and snapping away.

Though the ride was about an hour long, it didn't feel that way because, I was very entertained.

Clio picture

For chev who is curious. Taken with flash but than donno why my peach colour blusher turns out pink??

Will do the swatch when I have time later during weekend. Tried the retractable eyeliner today. So so only, cos it smudges abit at the lower lid at end of the day, but at the tag of 6000won, or S$7 thereabout, how to complain?

Recessionista, Who?

Came back very late today and can only post up part of my hauls from Seoul. I had a great time sightseeing, shopping shopping and shopping for skin care and cosmetics. I was so tempted to cart back the whole shop ! :p

Below are some pictures on part of my skincare hauls. I think I have bought enough masks to open up a shop!

The Skinfood and The Faceshop are so dirt cheap compared to Singapore or Shanghai! T caught on my shopping bug and contributed to the loot as well. How can we resist such the temptation?

Part of my Faceshop Hauls (Day 1 only)

Laneige Hauls

Total Mask Hauls (think abt 100??)

Part of my Skinfood Hauls

Clio purchases (some bought on behalf of friend)but am guilty of half.

Will post up more pics of my loot later.

Love Shuffle

I promised I would blog about this drama and here it goes!

Love Shuffle is a Japanese drama about the love lives of 4 singles who lives at the top floor of a luxury apartment in Tokyo. One day, the lift stalled due to a power failure and trapped 4 of them inside. While waiting for the lift to work, each start sharing about their love lives and wondered whether there is a truly fated one out there. As a result, they came up with an idea of shuffling their partners every week to find out more about their feelings.

The show has the Tamaki Hiroshi 玉木宏 of Nodame Cantabile fame as one of the lead actors. The rest of cast 香里奈 (Karina), F4 Matsuda Shoda and Tanihara Shosuke as the 4 high flying neighbours.

I especially like the way they assemble at the common corridor to wait for each other after work, sipping wine and all while waiting. Plus their pajamas parties! How cool isn't it?

After watching I only wish I could this kind of life!

Thumbs up. I greatly recommend this show as this gives a new fresh perspective in love.

I am on my 3 re-runs now. LOL. Escape from reality = watch TV.

Mei chan's butler

Lately, I have found or I should say relive my interest in watching Jdorama. Few things I particularly like about watching Japanese dramas is that the plot is always short and sweet, unlike Taiwanese counterpart and the leads are always so good-looking!

The trend from doing live-adaption has been on for a long time. Since Meteor Garden days (10 years ago?) These dramas adapted from top mangas are sure guarantee in ratings with the pretty looking actors and actresses as the main roles.

Last Saturday, I was so glued to the TV watching Mei Chan no Shitsuji (我的帅管家)or otherwise known as Mei's Butler in Engish. This was also a live adapation based on a Japanese manga. A typical cinderalla fairy tale in most Shojo manga, the heroine (Mei) realised that she is the grand-daughter and heiress to the one of the most powerful corporation in Japan after her parents died in an accident. She is forced to transfer to St Lucia's Girl School where the rich and powerful send their daughters to be trained for society in future. There every girl is equipped with a butler to help them through and Mei was appointed a "S" butler - Rihito, to help her through all the obstacles she faced in school until graduation.

One of the rules in the school is not to fall in love with your butler, otherwise the girl will face expulsion.....

I particularly like Mizushima Hiro in his role as the "S" butler! He was so hot! He also starred in Hana Kimi and Zettai Kareshi.

My next drama - Love Shuffle. (I will blog about this later)

When married man travels with single woman becomes society fault

I have always wanted to blog about E, my university friend from UK, a gal from Mars who is so so out of this world with the rest of us humans. At the grand age of 34, her quest for the HG LOVE has never been lucky. So many men had brushed past her, without so much as a glance but she is still very hopeful, which I think is amazing given the experiences she had with them.

Yesterday, after a very long drought of not msning me (as I couldn't be bothered with all her nonsense) came her tales.

(have edited to remove names for confidentiality purposes)

E : i'm thinking of either joining a convent or getting a job out of s'pore. Chris say i must have the calling lor
Catflying : convent? do what?
E : serve the Lord, practice cathalism
Catflying says: i thought u r christian?
i suggest before u do anything silly. go see a doc.
E : see a doc, why
Catflying says: doc = shrink.
Catflying says: to sort out ur thoughts.
E : doc will not help on this. they are like consellor only
E : listen not give advice
E : only religious leader can help
Catflying says: yup. but thru listening will be able to help u sort out ur problems
E : i dont have a problem
Catflying says: that is THE problem
E : i just dont wan to be in s'pore where they pressurise u to get married lah and that type of crap
E : if i serve God then all will go away
E : or stay away from s'pore society
E : in USA no body bother if u are married
E : except the s'porean gals
E : they are the ones that are crazy and need doc not me
Catflying says: up to you lah.
E : anyway...u think i say wan to serve God then serve God ar
E : still got to go for classes and try out if suitable for 1yr lor
Catflying says: well, if that is your calling.
Catflying says: than god will take you in.
E : thats wat Chris said too
E : will see how it goes lah
E: God shall love me more that those ppl here
Catflying says: and I can only give you one advice.
Catflying says: you must love yourself.
Catflying says:
and not live by other people's standards
E : if i dont have to live with other ppl std
E : then y my mentor does not allow me to go travelling with a married guy
E : why does ppl have to gossip
Catflying says: if you even consider going travelling with a married guy. i think you have serious problems
E : initially i wanted to share hse with a guy from china
E : he is married but wife not here
E : my mentor scolded me like mad
E : travel only wat...not share a room lor
E : but ppl already talking lor
E :to him its more like.........if i trust him then why not
E : to me its more like .......we live in a society not vacuum
E : fainted lah
Catflying says: evelyn. sometimes you must get your values right
Catflying says: if you think travelling alone with a married man. whether or not u share a room or separately is ok. than by all means. go do it.
Catflying says: sometimes, i wonder whether you know why people gossip.
E : ppl have nothign better to do
Catflying says: hiyah. you are 34 this year. how to scold you?
Catflying says: you must really know how to think for yourself.
E : ok then the married man is older than me lor
E : he shd know how to think lor
E : then why still like tat
E : he shd not even have suggested
Catflying says: because, when things goes wrong. whose reputation is more at stake?
Catflying says: or even when things don't go wrong. whose reputation at stake?
Catflying says: people will only say you are stupid.
E : this is a very society problem
Catflying says: excuse me for my lango.
Catflying says: but than this is society.
E :why ppl only talk about the women
Catflying says: you go and ask other people
Catflying says: whether what I say is true or not
E : the man is equally stupid
Catflying says: we are still asians.
E : thats y i hated it
E : thats y i hated to be a women
Catflying says: hiyah. do what u think is correct.
E : i totally fed up
Catflying says: anyway, you are coming back soon.
Catflying says: so fed up will end.
E : USA society is not like that why the asian here still behave like that
E :my fed up will not end lor
E : bcos in S'pore the expecation of women is even higher
E : here i stay away from home and live a lone as a women
E : but in s'pore the expectation is differeent
E : expect to live with parents till get married
E : a lot of the expectations are just rubbish
E : and i'm very disappointed
E : perhaps i ve been here long at least 15mths now
E : i just cant stand having to live s'porean ways and asian culture
Catflying says: than don come back. stay in usa.
E : the problem is that asainl here also have same expectation of asian women
Catflying says: you are sounding very disillusioned.
E : yes extremely upset
E : upset over the gossip
E : bcos i find that it was really my life to live
E : i m not guilty then y ppl pronounce u guilty
Catflying says: than why care abt gossip.
Catflying says: just do wat u want.
Catflying says: as long u knwo you not guilty
E : yup gossip is the last thing to care but if it harm my career then different liao
E : my training mentor interfer then diff liao lor
E : she is our Asst director
Catflying says: so you upset that the gossip cost you not being able to go with the guy is it?
Catflying says: you sound like whining over not able to go.
E : got 1st gossip liao, u think i still dare to go
Catflying says: actually i think you better don talk to me abt it anymore
Catflying says: cos i think we have no common ground
E : yah ur stand will still be the same
Catflying says: exactly.
Catflying says: and i just can say, if you put yourself in that man's wife shoe.
Catflying says: how would u feel.
E : i would scold my hubby not the women
E : bcos he suggested
Catflying says: and if you see ur roommate doing the same thing.
Catflying says: would u go talk to her?
E : nope
Catflying says: or would u think its ok.
E : i leave it to my mentor
E : i'm not her judge
Catflying says: if you think its ok. than i think you can stop telling me abt all these.
Catflying says: its not a matter of judgement.
Catflying says: i think its common sense
E : there is another s'porean gal who is married also going out every wkend with other guys
E : but wat else can i say
E : ppl gossip i just keep quiet
Catflying says: and by writing that, u actually felt something aldy
E : my mentor give me a lot of pressure
E : and i dont like it bcos she is my Asst director
Catflying says: actually this is not v good on your career.
Catflying says: shows that you have no judgement at all.
E : yah
E : that gal already out of favor liao
E : mayb sent home soon
E : so its still the society issue
E : i tot only based on work performance
Catflying says: and if you think its a society issue.
Catflying says: than i think you better go join convent
Catflying says: than you would not be living in a society but in a nunnery
Catflying says: and than no such problems.
E : hahaha
Catflying says: agree?
E : going to lab now
E : sort of agree
Catflying says: ok bye!
Catflying says: take care.

Is she that dumb? I have only this much of patience.

T's Project - Four Seasons

T has been very busy lately with his project as it is at the end of construction, that means handover time ! I haven't seen him that much this week as he was doing OT till midnight and weekends all burnt. (Last week and this week)

I did the wifey thing of visiting him on site yesterday and went to tour his project. There could be a possibility that we may buy one of the units and being in the same line, I don't mind "kapohing" to find out more about his project. (Mainly villas)

Standing in front of a sample unit

From the clubhouse, crossing the bridge to the villas. (Yes, that's T with my Planetes)

The project is situated in Songjang, about 40mins away from Shanghai city centre. Currently MRT line goes straight to there, and the site is about 800m away from the station exit. The surroundings are still undeveloped, with lots of vacant land, farming lands etc.

The land itself has little rivers running through (real ones), the feel of a holiday resort. Sheshan is situated somewhere behind but too far to be seen. It will be very scenic come few years later if the trees and greens turn lusher

Sneak peak at the ID (Toilet)

Sample Bedroom
Each villa retails at about 12k to 18k per m2 depending on the location. The sizes of villa ranges from 180m2 to 250m2 in area. The basement is given free which is about 70-80m2.
Very tempting isn't it?

Stress = Sick ?

I felt as if a millions of needles pricking at my throat every time I swallow since dinner on Sunday and it gotten worst yesterday when I felt 2 millions needles poking every time I drank something. Grhhh..

By lunch yesterday, the words on my laptop screen were so hazy that I couldn't concentrate. I felt tired and at 4pm called it a day and headed home to rest. I boiled some herbal tea, drank it all (yucks) and slept all the way to 9pm where T just reached home from a night of drinking with his architect and colleagues. (Angry!)

My temperature was slightly above the norm at 37.4 degrees c in the afternoon and had gotten better after a good sleep. I went back to bed again at 11pm and slept all the way to 1030am this morning, skipping work and meeting.

I was ridiculed by T saying that normally tonsillitis is caused by stress (which he had before in Chengdu)and was joking that the little stress that I had is nothing compared to him in office. Grhhhh... (Had to rub salt to my wound).

Well, he jokingly said that if he shift to a HK company, (a post which double his current salary) I could just stay at home to shake leg!

So much for insults, I want to work leh! (albeit leisurely...) Hehe

Simply Tired

Sorry for the dearth of blogs over the past 2 weeks. Too much things was happening in office and I was too knackered over to bring myself to blog about it and be reminded of all the unhappy things that happened.

First, my Hong Kong colleague resigned. So thus my boss E told me that I have to take over ALL his job. (hello.. I am still under pay cut hor!) Well, I was extremely pissed but then what to do?

Next, my boss fired my staff without informing me. That leave me alone to battle with my client and take over his job. Reason of firing him was that he went to recommend a contractor to the client and said that it was introduced by our company. The contractor was in fact my ex-colleague who was retrenched and borrowed some company name to tender for this job. As a professional QS, we have to rule such unqualified companies out, and instead of recommending to the client, saying that they are able to do the job. But that said, E should at least informed me in advance so that I can find a replacement in time! Darn.

Third, client is ridiculous. Keep on asking me to do ridiculous things and things which are not part of my scope and work. I shan't go into details but than I am simply very tired of dealing with their internal politics and they wanting to build a caltex house (office building) with the budget of a HDB block. How to???

Luck be, a headhunter is knocking my door. I have spoken to him twice and now awaiting for a chance to speak to the client, who is a big UK QS consultancy firm. We will see how it goes..

Meanwhile, I am resuming my passion for Japanese anime. I am currently watching Skip Beat. It is the story of Kyoko Mogami a 17-year-old girl who discovers that her childhood friend and romantic goal, Sho Fuwa, only keeps her around to act as a maid and earn his living expenses, as he works his way to become the top pop idol in Japan. Furious and heart broken, she vows to get revenge by beating him in show business, and enters another agency which is almost as big as Sho Fuwa's agency. There she met Ren Tsuruga, a very talented actor and also labeled as "The most coolest male celebrity". Ren did not have a good impression of Kyoko first, but then change his feelings along the way and eventually falls in love with Kyoko. Currently the manga (which I am also chasing) is up to 136 chapter and still going on.

Currently, the anime was up to 22 episode.I am totally hooked by the storyline. Very light-hearted and cute which reminds me very much of Ouran High School Host Club.

Cold

Yes I am having a cold in Spring when temperature is still hovering below 10degrees. In fact, my thermometer in my room is showing 13.5 degrees whereas outside temperature now is 4 degrees.

And this is March! The season of Spring which I should be smelling sweet scent of flowers blooming and having picnics in park. Yet now we are still suffering from the tail end of the winter, with rain plaguing us for the past 3 weeks. It even snowed last night at Songjiang where T's site is.

Too miserable now to blog further. Going to sleep after taking 2 cold panadols.

Shower? Lets go to the gym!

One of the funny things I observed during my weekly gym routine is that the Shanghainese loves to go to the gym just to, shower.

Yes, shower. Not that they visit the gym for workout and hitherto shower. No. They visit the gym just to shower.

And the shower facilities there aren’t any fantastic. My common shower at my apartment back in Singapore would beat them anytime. And if compare to Singapore Sports Council shower facilities in public pool, SSC is better

I see all sorts of people from young to old. Old, I mean is enough to be my grandmother. Sometimes I see familiar faces, bringing their baskets of shampoos and lotions to the shower.

This leave me wondering, is water very expensive in China? It really makes no sense to me. First, the gym is located in an expensive and upmarket housing development and people who stay there could not be too poor not to have their own private shower, unless they are too cheapo to want save the water and heating bills. Second, you need to pay for the gym membership which charges say 2800RMB per year. This money would be enough to cover the annual utilities bills you incurred for your shower, many times over. Third, you need to incur transportation charges to reach the gym if you are not staying around the area.

As for the shower facilities, the shower curtains are falling apart. Some of the shower heads are not working, the water pressure is low, the shower cubicles could be quite dirty at times (hairs not removed) and long queue to the shower cubicles.

Given a choice, I would rather shower at my own leisure in my own toilet rather than queuing up for my turn in a common toilet.

Oh, and I have to say this behavior is only peculiar to Shanghai because I don’t see this happening in Chengdu.

Famous Heads

What is the most talked about topic in China these day got to be related to the 2 bronze animal heads below

Spoils from the destruction of the Old Summer Palace or known famously as 圆明园 burnt down in 1860s by the Anglo French allied during the Second Opium War.

The two animals, rabbit and rat were part of the 12 animals representing the Chinese zodiac were looted during the mass destruction. Currently they are being put up for auction by Yves Saint Laurent Foundation in Paris on 25 February which is today. Latest news, the Chinese Government failed to get an injunction to stop the Christie auction from going ahead.

The people here are absolutely outraged and felt that these 2 relics should be returned to China FREE! This spark off outcries here as it is seen as rubbing salt to the wound to be reminded of the shame of the destruction of the Old Summer Palace. Worse, the perpetrators are now selling and profiting from it.

Currently a campaign is in place to collect signatures to protest. The campaign is held in the old provincial city Nanjing and the Old Summer Palace 圆明园 (at Beijing).

The rabbit and rat heads were part of the relics which were lost during the famous destruction.
These bronzes were once part of a fountain that displayed the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. Five of the bronze animal heads have already been returned to China (bought by a Beijing Enterprise in 2003 during a New York auction), while the whereabouts of five others is unknown.

I bet being a super power now and a lot of mega rich Chinese Biz man, I am sure these 2 relics would be purchased and repatriated back to its motherland. (Also not forgetting the West is now reeling over the financial crisis thus no money to buy. )

Seeing this brought back all the memories of me and Saresha in Reading and in British Museum discussing about the spoils of war the Great Britain looted during the times when they were, GREAT.

I for sure belongs to the group who feels that these loots or spoils should be returned to the owner, where the relics came from.

T's quick fix special chix recipe

Dinner last sunday was a simple affair. As T had to work both days over the weekend, I had no one to accompany to the market. Plus weather was so cold and I was huddled under my blanket, reading online novel and sleeping. Zero productivity.

Sunday is always a day where we prefer to cook at home. No reason why, maybe because we have all the time to do marketing and than planning for menu for the night.

And I digress.

Ok, back to T's secret recipe in marinating chicken wings for 15 mins before baking.

Below is a blow by blow account how T did our yummy chickens!!

First wash the chicken mid-joint

Then dry them with kitchen towel. (T insisted I take pic and took down this step as he said not many will know)

Next, cut a slit at the back of the mid-joint for it to absorb the marinate

Pour in oyster sauce, pepper, sesame oil, a teaspoon of sugar, chicken essence powder and light soya sauce for marinating (Can add a dash of Shao Xin wine or whisky if you want)

Mix the marinate together with the chicken mid joints. Ready for baking

While baking at 200 degrees, turn over every 6 mins until brown.

Voila!! My favourite yummy chicken in just 30 mins (including preparation and marinating time)

PS - Thanks Chev for pointing out its mid joints not thigh!! Grrhh.. what was i thinking?
Edited to add - T said before putting in to bake, pour the remainder of the marinate onto the chicken. Bake the back facing up first for about 10 mins than turn and bake the next for 6 mins until brown. Also put the chicken close to the grill.

Vegetable Curry

Last week project was vegetable curry. Very simple dish to cook and also one can eat it as a lontong if you have the *rice*.

What you need

1. Curry Powder
2. Santan or dried coconut powder
3. Cabbage
4. Long beans
5. Garlic
6. Carrot
7. Tau Kee / Tau pok
8. Tang Hoon
9. Dried scrimp
10. (My granny likes to add fish cakes, brinjal)

Salt to taste

Unexpected casualty

In retaliation to my boss E declaration of paycut for high salaried staff, my Hong Kong colleague P tendered his resignation recently. I only knew of it this morning when my boss asked me to go to the meeting room secretly (for what? since we were having teleconversation) to break the news.

And of course, the Wondergirl in office has to take over ALL his portfolio. Ok, my boss did not instruct but nicely asked if I have free time to take it up. He did hint of pay raise but than rebutt himself by saying see how, since company having financial hardship.

I said I would try, and spent the whole afternoon learning from P about his work which is more on auditing than QS role. Headache... alot of donkey work to reconcile figures and I have to ask him for more staff under me to help me do it.

Playing with Minerals Makeup

2 updates in a day! Hehe.. Make up for my lack of blogging this week.

Thanks (or blame?) Chev who introduced me to minerals makeup, I am now having fun with my little sachet samples, putting them into containers and testing out their colours on my face.

I want more!!!

Mineral makeup is supposedly very good on your skin especially if you have a sensitive one. Mineral makeup like its namesake is products made of all natural, finely ground minerals from the earth, without any of the chemicals, dyes, and preservatives found in traditional makeup.

Mineral makeup last longer than my normal traditional makeup, at 6pm I can still see the coverage on my face, without any touching up. And because I was having the bad breakout 2 weeks ago, the minerals allow my skin to breathe, that maybe could have assisted to my skin recovery.

Mineral makeup is also good for hiding the skin’s wrinkles, crow's feet and fine lines, due to the fact it reflects sunlight and the results is a very healthy look. Since it is natural, some say you can wear it to you sleep and than go to work the next day with it. (Ah... no need to wash face??) This is the extent how fans raves about it.

Playing with my minerals this week.

First foray into making Gyoh Hiong

My virgin attempt at making home-made gyoh hiong! Inspired by my granny who makes this on our yearly CNY gathering! I just *heart* my granny recipe!!

Last week, I finally managed to locate my nearest wet market and found the ingredients for gyoh hiong. Being so bloody free every weekend, I decided that I should spent Sunday with a cooking project. So last Sunday, I was busy chopping chopping and chopping the ingredients.

And of course the busybody T was hovering behind me trying to give instructions! I was so fed up and had to scream at him to get out of the kitchen.

And sadly after some confusions, I have to *ask* the chef to come and help out! I couldn't find my granny's recipe (which surprising surfaced today!) and had to use his Tor family recipe.

The BEFORE look.

Then after few futile attempts at wrapping up the gyoh hiong (and few arguments with T on how to do it) I decided to handover to the house chef who is more enthusiastic than me. In the end, my gyoh hiong turn out like this.

Taste is good considering is this my first try. At least it taste like gyoh hiong! Hohoho... I realised I didn't follow granny recipe quite closely. Shall try again next time.

My recipe for the gyoh hiong (More to T's family recipe)

200g Pork Mince Meat
1 Carrot Chop into pieces
6 Mushroom cut into pieces
1 Onion Chop

Seasoning
Five Spice Power (Alot alot of it to bring out the taste)
Pepper
Salt
Chicken Essence Power
Flour
1 Egg

and Beancurd Sheet. (wipe it with damp cloth to rid of the salty taste)

Method
Mixes all the ingredient together. And than leave it to breathe. Thereafter, take a spoonful of mix to deep fry, to check whether the taste is ok. If not, add the necessary seasoning until you are satisfied with the outcome.

Steam the gyoh hiong for about 10-15mins and then deep fry it later before serving.
