A date with Phantom

Finally the day arrived for the much awaited muscial, Phantom of the Opera. The gals and i had booked the ticket since last year, knowing that the response would be good. The last time Phantom was in Singapore was in early 1990s. 10 years have passed and it's another run!

This would be my 3rd time catching Phantom of the Opera. I have been listening to Phantom since my days in secondary school. Thanks to Mrs Leong, my literature teacher who brought out the interest in me. From secondary school days, I have caught numerous musicals in Singapore and in WestEnd (London).

Like the previous rounds, I paid for the most expensive tickets. It paid to book early as we got one of the best seats in the theatre. Due to the close proximity, we could make out the features of all the singers! Raoul is very handsome!

The cast today was the international cast who did Hong Kong in 2006. The role of Phantom was reprised by Brad Little (whom we feel is abit stout), Christine by Marni Raab and Raoul by John Bowles.

The set/prop remains unchanged from 10 years ago except that I felt that the roof scene where they sang "All I ask of you" is new. I felt that Marni Raab voice is too opera-tic. The original Christine Daae (Sarah Brightman) sang with so much innocence and sweetness and its hard not to compare Marni with her. Especially when the role of Christine is suppposed to be young and innocent. A little disappointment there.

Can't fault Brad and John. They sang very well. But we felt the chemistry between Raoul and Christine wasn't all that fabulous. We have seen better combination. Over all, the only thing to rant at is the pricey souvenirs! The programme is going at $25 per booklet. Damn bloddy expensive! In the end, C got a keychain $12, and myself a mug at $15.

The 3 gals out on a date with Phantom.

Oh, and my favourite song from the muscial is "All I ask of you".
